Dysport

Wrinkles on the face and crow's feet around the eyes can be an easy tell of age and previous sun damage. Through a treatment with Dysport, a wrinkle-reducing injectable, however, these visible signs of aging can be greatly reduced in a short amount of time.

Dysport, which is comprised of botulinum toxin, works by paralyzing the targeted muscle. As the muscle is prevented from moving, the overlying wrinkle becomes smoothed out. The benefits of Dysport have been seen in Europe since the 90s and the injectable was approved for use in the US by the FDA in 2009.

Dysport works to smooth a variety of wrinkles including:

  • frown lines
  • crow's feet
  • forehead lines

Most patients over 18 years old are ideal for Dysport treatments though those who have had an adverse reaction to a botulinum toxin injection, such as Botox, should not receive Dysport treatments.

How is Dysport injected?

After you have consulted with your plastic surgeon and a treatment site has been chosen, the area will be cleansed. Using a careful technique, your plastic surgeon will inject a specific amount of Dysport into the muscle. You may experience a slight tingling from the needle, but an anesthetic is usually not necessary. The entire treatment can be completed in as little as 15 minutes.

Is there any downtime following treatment?

One of the benefits of Dysport is the lack of recovery time. While you will need to remain upright for several hours after treatment and avoid alcohol and exercise, you should be able to maintain much of your routine.

How long will it take for me to see the benefits of Dysport?

After several days and up to one week, you should see the full results of your Dysport treatment. The wrinkles at the treatment site should be greatly reduced and your apparent age may also decrease as a benefit. The positive wrinkle-reducing effects of your treatment can last up to six months. Many patients choose to return within this time to undergo follow-up treatments, however.

What are the alternatives to Dysport?

Botox is similar to Dysport in that it contains the botulinum toxin which works to minimize muscle movement and smooth out wrinkles. Injectable fillers are also available. Unlike Dysport and Botox, these injectables actually fill in wrinkles and beautifully restore lost facial volume.
