Your Consultation

Before you choose to proceed with breast reduction surgery, you will have a personal consultation with Dr. Boudreaux or Dr. Claiborne. At this appointment, you will discuss your medical history and your treatment goals. Dr. Boudreaux or Dr. Claiborne will take measurements and gather other information to determine whether the surgery is right for you. Good candidates not only have overly large breasts, but are also non-smokers in good general health.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Most procedures are performed using general anesthesia to ensure your comfort. Depending on your needs, Dr. Boudreaux and Dr. Claiborne can choose from one of several incision patterns. Incisions can be made around the areola or circling the areola and also extending down to the breast crease. For the most comprehensive modification, the doctor will create an anchor-shaped incision around the areola, down to the bottom of the breast, and along the breast crease.

Through these incisions, Dr. Boudreaux and Dr. Claiborne will remove excess fat and skin to achieve a more proportionate breast size for your body. Liposuction may be performed at this time to provide more precise fat removal. In some cases, the surgeon will also reposition the nipple and areola higher on the breast mound to create a more natural, balanced look.

After the recontouring is complete, Dr. Boudreaux and Dr. Claiborne will stitch the incisions closed. Special dressings will be applied to protect the breasts. Most patients are able to return home the next day, and some are even discharged the same day as surgery.

The Recovery Period

Afterward, you can expect to take one to two weeks off of work, and at least one month off from physical activity, such as exercise and heavy lifting. You will return to our office for a follow-up with Dr. Boudreaux and Dr. Claiborne, at which point they will remove your bandages and stitches. You can expect to experience some pain, swelling, and sensitivity after the surgery. Adequate rest, as well as following your doctor’s instructions, can minimize these side effects. You may also be prescribed medication to help manage any discomfort.
