Erase Regrets With Laser Tattoo Removal
Nearly everyone has a mistake from their past that they wish they could change, but most people are not reminded of it every time they look in the mirror. As more and more people choose to get tattoos, an increasing number are growing to regret that decision. Over the years, there have been many attempts to find an efficient treatment to erase tattoos, including surgical excision, bleaching agents, and dermabrasion. These methods have resulted in unfavorable effects ranging from significant scarring to ineffective removal. The most dramatic results have been obtained with non-surgical treatment using laser tattoo removal. At Dr. Benjamin Boudreaux's New Orleans area office, we use the PicoSure® laser system, an advanced technique that offers superior results. If you have a tattoo that you would like to remove or have questions about the benefits of our laser, please contact our office to schedule an appointment.
PicoSure® Laser Technology
PicoSure® laser technology uses ultra-short pulses of thermal energy to heat up and break apart the pigment particles that make up a tattoo. Once the ink has been broken into tiny dust-like particles, they can be absorbed and eliminated by the body. Most modern tattoos are composed of many different colors for a more dramatic effect, but this makes the process of removing the ink much more difficult. The PicoSure® laser can be calibrated to specific wavelengths, which will target and eliminate each pigment individually. Each color within a tattoo can be treated and faded until it is no longer visible. Overall, the PicoSure® laser offers more complete removal that can be accomplished in fewer treatments than other methods.
The Laser Tattoo Removal Process
Before treatment begins, you will be provided with protective eye shields to ensure your safety. Topical or local anesthetic may be applied to ensure your comfort, but most patients report no more pain than the sensation of a rubber band snapping against the skin. First, the laser will be tested on your unique skin tone to determine the most effective energy level. Smaller tattoos will require less energy to effectively treat the area than larger tattoos, and their size and complexity will determine the duration of your treatment session. Immediately after treatment, you may be advised to apply an ice pack to soothe the skin. You will be given a topical antibiotic cream to protect the skin, and you may be provided with a bandage which will be required for a few days following each treatment session.
Most complex tattoos will require multiple appointments to effectively clear the pigment from your skin. The best results are achieved when treatment sessions are spread about six to eight weeks apart, and are continued until the tattoo has substantially or completely faded to your desired visibility. Treatment plans are individualized and based on a number of factors, including the color and amounts of ink present in your tattoo.
