Types of Rhinoplasty

We might recommend one of two types of rhinoplasty to our patients in the greater New Orleans and Metairie areas:

Closed Rhinoplasty

In closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are made inside the nostrils. This often allows sufficient access to the areas in need of surgical correction. This method is generally considered to be less invasive and involves a shorter recovery time. Many patients favor the closed technique because it poses less risk of visible scarring after the treatment is complete.

Open Rhinoplasty

An open rhinoplasty involves the same two incisions inside the nostrils, with an additional incision across the columella (the strip of tissue connecting the nostrils). The primary advantage of this technique is greater visibility of the surgical area. We can also more accurately graft cartilage and address the tip of the nose with the wider access point.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Here is what you can generally expect when you arrive at our New Orleans surgical center on the day of your rhinoplasty...
Rhinoplasty for medical reasons is often covered by insurance. We also accept CareCredit financing.

Anesthesia

Before your surgery, our anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist will administer general anesthesia. General anesthesia induces a state of unconsciousness so you will not feel pain throughout the surgery.

Incisions

Once the anesthesia takes effect, Dr. Boudreaux or Dr. Claiborne will carefully create small incisions to reduce visible scarring. The location of the incisions depends on whether you undergo open or closed rhinoplasty.

Reshaping

Through these incisions, we gently raise the underlying soft tissue to access the cartilage and bone structure. Your doctor will remove any excess cartilage, or perform a cartilage graft if we need to supplement the tissue in a certain area. If you suffer from a deviated septum, we will reposition the cartilage to open up your airway.

Finishing Touches

After the corrections are made, we close the incisions with sutures or surgical tape. The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you will be released to go home later that day once the anesthesia begins to wear off. You will need a friend or family member to drive you home.

Recovery and Results

Days 1-3

Immediately after your rhinoplasty, you can expect some discomfort which can be treated with pain medication as recommended. It is normal to experience some swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes, which will usually begin to fade after a few days.

Days 3-7

During the first week of recovery, you will wear a splint over the nose to help it retain its new shape. While patients typically start to feel more like themselves during this time, it is important to keep activity to a minimum.

Week 1-2

Around one week later, you will visit your doctor for a follow-up appointment to check your progress and have the splint removed. Most patients can return to their work or school schedule at this time, as long as it doesn't involve strenuous physical activity.

Months 1-6

We generally clear patients for all normal activities and exercise around six to eight weeks after rhinoplasty.  While the majority of physical side effects will subside in the first 30 days, some residual swelling can last for up to six months.

One Year

You will gradually notice the contours of your nose becoming more refined as you continue to heal. The final results may take a year to become fully apparent, however, you will get to enjoy the effects of rhinoplasty for a lifetime.
